New NHS Standards for Communications relating to Referred Treatment

By Administrator , 7 July 2026

THe NHS has published and promulgated new standards for communication with patients referred for treatment. The full account can be found here.  The news item can be found here.

The 8 new standards are:

  1. When you are referred you will know when your referral is accepted or rejected within 28 days.
  2. While on the waiting list and throughout your care communication will be clear and easy to understand; if you,or your unpaid carer, have specific communications needs, you will have the opportunity to tell your provider these.
  3. When your referral is accepted, you will get information to help you while you wait.
  4. While on the waiting list and throughout your care you will get regular updates on your wait at least every 12 weeks.
  5. Before your appointments, you will be able to tell your provider of any additional needs and reasonable adjustments you require.
  6. You will receive clear information about your appointments in good time - at least 21 days in advance.
  7. If your appointment is cancelled, by either you or your provider, a new date will be arranged in good time - within at most 28 days.
  8. You will be told when your care is complete and what happens next.
